'Secure jobs' for Gladstone workers with contract win

A $2.4 million tender has secured vital work for a Gladstone business for the next 12 months.

Fulton and Hogan Pty Ltd Gladstone scored a $2.4m council tender for its Gladstone Urban Area road resurfacing project.

Manager Brad Khan told his 25 workers this week they secured the work to resurface 11 Gladstone roads.

It comes at a crucial time for the business, which is two weeks off finishing a year-long asphalt project at the Curtis Island's APLNG site.

"It has quietened down for us too," Mr Khan said.

"With small business we've been fortunate that we have had Curtis Island work,. but it is a good thing that we have this contract to keep everyone busy."

Mr Khan said because of the tender it was likely they would hire more casual workers to keep up with other existing and future contracts.

The company is the only asphalt resurfacing business in Gladstone, with their nearest competitor Boral Asphalt Rockhampton.

"They keep us honest in terms of quotes in this neck of the woods and we keep them honest in Rockhampton, so the council is getting value for money."

Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett was pleased that a project of this significance would be completed by a local company.

The decision is in line with the council's new 'locals first' policy for tenders.

Council's Works and Traffic Committee Chair Cr Peter Masters said Council had identified capital projects for inclusion in the 2016/17 financial year's asphalt resurfacing program.

"Consideration was also given to other major projects, including the Aldi construction in Breslin Street and the Glenyon Road and Derby Street water main crossings, which are located within the vicinity of the work sites and further emphasise the importance of these projects."
