AUSSIE RULES: September usually heralds the end of the footy year but not for Mick Murtagh and Jack Lumby, as they prepare for another tilt at the AFL Masters National Carnival this year on the Gold Coast.
"We have been travelling together to the carnival since 2004 and it is great to have the event back in Queensland," Lumby said.
"Over the years Mick and I have visited most states as part of the Queensland team and look forward to catching up with teammates and friendly foes from all over Australia."
Lumby said the introduction of new age groups made it hard for them to hang up the boots.
"The divisions are over 35s, 40s, 45s, 50s, 55s and now over 60s. They keep putting the age groups up and we keep coming back," he said.
"We are very proud to pull on the Queensland jumper and compete against the best in our age groups from other state teams from around Australia."
The pair found their original polo, pictured in this article, while packing for this year's trip.
"The Queensland team matched this polo with a white singlet in 2004, and when all the footballers did their washing the colour ran and most players now had pink gear," Murtagh said.
"As you can see from the picture we have collected quite an assortment of team gear over the years.
"My wife Jayne says I need another wardrobe...or two."
Both Murtagh and Lumby travelled to Tasmania last year to compete at the 2015 event.
The third representative from the Whitsunday Bald Eagles going to the Gold Coast carnival is John Ryan, a former dual All Australian team representative.
Ryan said he loved everything about the competition.
"I look forward to joining up with my teammates from previous years and playing some really good footy," Ryan said.
"We have beaten the top teams before and will do it again."
The event is not all bumps and bruises, with a very comprehensive social itinerary surrounding the three game days.
The 2016 AFL Masters National Carnival runs from October 1-8 and features a host of events and activities including AFL Women's Masters games.
The final will be held on October 8 and culminate with a presentation night to be held at Sea World.
It's already been a big year for the Bald Eagles as they reclaimed their Gold City Cup and continue to travel around the world to play the game they love.
