Fisher 'stoked' to reel in shark at popular paddle spot

HE'S a keen fisherman, but once is enough for James Holt when it comes to reeling in a shark.

Mr Holt had been wondering what had been pinching his fish in the Noosa River lately, and on Sunday he "found the culprit".

It took him about 15 minutes to reel in the roughly 1.8m bull shark.

"I had the rod fully in the water while he was running on heavy drag 'cause (a) hire boat just cut straight in," he wrote on his Facebook page.

"He didn't jump, stayed low the whole fight."

With the river busy with paddleboarders and boaties, Mr Holt said his catch had caused quite a stir.

"Paddleboarders seemed shocked that there's sharks so close to houses," he wrote.

After the tough catch, Mr Holt got up close to the shark for a quick snap before releasing it back into the river.

"I've never seen a bully in the flesh so was cool to see," he said.

Despite this being his first physical encounter with a shark, he said bull sharks were "legit everywhere" but "people just don't realise".

"There's always been sharks and there's always people in the water," he wrote.

"No one seems to get bothered, hope it never happens (a shark bite). They just seem to be oblivious that there's sharks in a river."

The catch came the day after a man reported being bitten by a shark at Kings Beach, Caloundra.
