TWO years ago Rockhampton's Glenn Edwards was on the red carpet at the Oscars.
Yesterday in Melbourne, the Nine Network cameraman performed an award-winning rescue of a missing boy in fast-flowing storm water.
Mr Edwards, 31, dived into a Melbourne creek and plucked missing seven-year-old boy, Ryan Pham, to safety after what he described as "an absolute miracle".
The Vietnamese boy, who has autism and cannot swim, had been missing for 16 hours and was naked hanging onto reeds in the shallows of Kororoit Creek when Mr Edwards and Nine news reporter Rob Scott spotted him.
"It was an absolute miracle. We literally by chance found him," Mr Edwards told The Morning Bulletin last night.
"Personally, it's been the most rewarding day of my life.
"We'd actually spent two hours out the front of the place where Ryan went missing (on Sunday night).
"He's an autistic kid and he can't speak very well and can't swim but has a fascination of water.
"He'd been missing for 16 hours so it wasn't looking good.
"We went for a drive down where there was a bit of a path (near the creek) and we started to get bogged so we turned around.
"As we were doing a U-turn Rob pointed out and said 'there he is'.
"When I saw him myself I couldn't believe it.
"Rob jumped straight on the phone and called 000 and told them we found him.
"I did not know how the kid survived.
"I went down to the edge of the water and once he saw us he started to come across.
"I jumped straight in and swam across and the current of the water was really strong.
"When I got to him I couldn't touch the bottom and we were up to our necks in water literally.
"It was freezing cold. I could feel his heart beating on my chest - he was so scared.
"The current was that strong it dragged us 30 metres down the creek.
"Ten minutes later, an hour later, I don't know.
"He might have been found or he might have been washed away."
Before the dramatic rescue following heavy rainfall earlier in the day, Mr Edwards had emailed his Nine colleague, US correspondent Rob Penfold, who was preparing for yesterday's Oscars.
"I only emailed Rob before work this morning to tell him to have a good time at the Oscars," Mr Edwards said.
"I was there only two years ago on the red carpet alongside him.
"It's just incredible, anyone would have done what I did though.
"I'm usually the person behind the camera so I don't like the spotlight."
Mr Edwards, who grew up in Rockhampton and went to Frenchville State School and Emmaus College, covered the Queensland floods at Grantham last year.
