Hockey gold tops London list

Liam de Young

LIAM De Young has never played hockey in London.

That statistic will change this year and while he's there, winning another Olympic gold medal with the Kookaburras tops his list of things to do.

Proud Queenslander De Young, a co-captain of the Australian men's hockey team, is now at home in Perth now but he has his sights firmly set on the London Olympics.

The 30-year-old defender, a veteran of 268 games in the green and gold, and his teammates will get an early taste of playing at Olympic Park in London later this month.

The Kookaburras will play against India, Germany and Great Britain in a dress rehearsal for the games that start in late July.

It will be the third consecutive Olympics for De Young and he said he couldn't wait to do it all again.

"It's something you work hard for a long time to achieve - it's a huge thrill," De Young, who won Olympic gold in Athens in 2004 and bronze in Beijing four years later, said. "You get to share it with 15 of your closest mates as well."

While he's no stranger to playing in an Olympics, De Young said there will be something new for him to tackle this time around.

"The games will be played on a blue surface and we'll be using yellow balls," De Young, who started playing the game when he was six, said.

"We've had a couple of sessions on a blue field now and it's easier to see the ball.

"I am really looking forward to playing on the Olympic venue though."

Although De Young lives in Perth, he said there was no way he would be cheering for the Glory in the A-League grand final on Sunday.

"Mate, it's the Roar, Broncos, Reds and Lions always for me - that won't ever change."
