A LARGE crowd at Gladstone's Marley Brown Oval was given plenty to cheer early on, as the CQ Capras looked as if they would match the more experienced Souths Logan Magpies.
However, in the end it was the old heads that won the day, with the Magpies running over the top of a tiring Capras to win 44-6.
Mid-way through the second spell the Capras were still in with a chance of causing an upset but in the end too many Capras errors enabled the Magpies to overcome that storm and then turn the screws to stretch the winning margin and make the result a little flattering.
In the end the difference between the two teams can be summed up in just one word: experience.
Should the young players in the Capras team want to learn from this lesson they should look no further than Magpies captain Phil Dennis, who played at lock and did all the little things right for most of the afternoon.
It was the little things that let down the Capras, with their error rate far too high to win a football match.
This left the team trying to defend multiple sets of six, which resulted in the players tiring towards the end of the game.
There were success stories in the Capras' ranks, with most of the forwards working tirelessly.
Dave McLellan continues to impress in his debut season in the Intrust Super Cup, while Alan Rothery and Tim Glasby were the most likely to break the Magpies' defensive line.
Of the backs, Reece Baker is another who has made the transition from local league to state cup football look relatively easy.
The evening had started well for the Capras, with the first points of the match posted by the Central Queensland team after just three-and-a-half minutes, when Gavin Hiscox dived through a forest of legs to score after good build-up play by James Crombie and Jon Tavinor.
A soft try from Willie Imo in the corner had the teams back on terms but the Capras still looked dangerous, opting for two points from a penalty, won by Glasby in front of the posts, which Cheyenne Motu converted. The remainder of the half belonged to the Magpies, with a try seconds before the siren a serious blow, after the Capras looked to have been in a strong field position.
The Capras rolled the ball into the Magpies' in-goal and had two chasers ready to pounce as fullback John Damen picked it up.
However, he evaded the would-be tacklers and ran 60 metres before a cover tackle from Rothery stopped him. Support players got up quickly and the ball was put through three sets of hands for a try to be scored between the posts.
For 15 minutes of the second spell the Capras showed plenty of spirit without troubling the scoreboard, before being blown away by the Magpies' late onslaught, which included three late tries.
