Rise in number of employed people due to part-time jobs

THE national unemployment rate remained unchanged in January, steady at 5.4%, figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed on Thursday.

In the latest jobs figures, the number of people employed in Australia did rise by 10,400 to 11,549,100 in January, but the rise did not affect the unemployment rate.

The ABS said the rise was largely due to an increase in part-time employment, up 20,200 people to 3,450,700 in January.

But many of those new part-time jobs may have come from workers previously employed full-time, with that figure dropping 9,800 to 8,098,400 people.
