Hours changed at Port of Airlie

CONSTRUCTION hours on the Port of Airlie development have been changed following community concern about noise levels.

Apartment owners and managers last week called on the developers to reduce the hours of pile driving, claiming tourists had been checking out early because of the noise.

As a result, the developers, project contractors and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) agreed to amend the piling times for a later start each day.

They also agreed to not drive piles on Saturdays which coincide with school holidays.

Vibration piling hours were 7am to 6pm Mondays to Saturdays, but have been changed to 9am to 6pm Mondays to Fridays until July 13, then from Mondays to Saturdays from 8am to 6pm. Percussion piling happened from 8am until noon and from 2pm to 5pm Mondays to Saturdays before the amendment.

It will now be carried out from 9am to 5pm Mondays to Fridays, excluding public holidays, until July 20.

From July 21 percussion piling will happen between 9am and 5pm from Monday to Saturday until completion.

At yesterday's Whitsunday Regional Council meeting, Cr Jan Clifford said she was happy with the outcome.

The current stage of sheet piling work is expected to be completed in mid August.
