WITH summer fast approaching and the weather heating up, it seems now is the time to swim in ocean waters.
However, with the warmer weather comes a higher likelihood of crossing the paths of potentially fatal marine stingers; namely the Irukandji and Box Jellyfish.
Whilst stings have been recorded all year round, there is a higher risk of being stung between October and May.
Irukandjis may be found at the reef and islands, as well as off the mainland, while Box Jellyfish are not typically found off the mainland. Although rarely fatal, Irukandji stings result in Irukandji syndrome; an extremely painful and debilitating condition.
It is worth taking active preventative measures to help ensure you don't get stung:
nWear protective clothing a full length protective suit reduces the risk of stings by 75 per cent as well as being great sun protection.
nHave access to vinegar most beaches in the Whitsunday area provide vinegar. Vinegar is a proven, effective means of killing invisible stinging cells.
nDon't swim alone make sure someone knows where you are and when you expect to be home.
nHave access to help carry a mobile phone or VHF radio.
nIf in doubt, treat as Irukandji - Saturate stings with vinegar, even minor stings. Don't go back in the water until you are sure you are not ill (wait 45 minutes). If in doubt or distress, seek help ASAP.
