OUTRIGGER Whitsunday has put in a herculean effort to finish fourth out of 86 crews in Hawaii's famous Na Wahine O Ke Kai canoe race on Sunday.

Cannonvale's Trish Cornish was among the crew to tackle the 41 kilometre race across the Kaiwi Channel, considered the world championship of long-distance canoe paddling for women's teams.

Proserpine's Carmen Brko also travelled to Hawaii as part of the squad but did not take part in the race.

The crew, drawn predominantly from north Queensland, crossed the line in 5hrs, 43mins and 47secs, less than 20 minutes after the winners, Team Bradley.

The crew had set a goal of finishing in the top five prior to embarking on their journey to Hawaii but a place one shy of the podium is likely to drive them to another attempt in the future.
