Police officer assaulted

A 62-YEAR-OLD Mackay man has been charged with assault causing bodily harm after punching a police officer in the face in Airlie Beach on Sunday night.

The man was being escorted from a licensed venue in the main street of Airlie Beach at about 8pm on Sunday night when he punched the officer in the eye.

A ring on the mans hand caused the officer to suffer a black eye.

The man will face court at a later date.
