A KOREAN tourist was crushed underneath a golf buggy when it rolled down a rock face on Hamilton Island in the Whitsundays on Monday night.

The woman had been in the buggy with a fellow traveller when it slipped over a breakwater on the edge of the island about 6.30pm.

The 24-year-old was thrown from the vehicle, which crashed down on top of her, rescuers said.

She was taken to the island's medical centre and treated for cuts and bruises before being airlifted to the Mackay Base Hospital for treatment to suspected spinal injuries.

RACQ-CQ Rescue Helicopter air crewman Darren Bobin said paramedics arrived to find her in a state of distress.
