Lights temporarily out across Cannonvale

UPDATE: ALL homes across Cannonvale temporarily lost power for a few minutes.

The power outage occurred shortly after 7pm.

Ergon Energy spokesperson Jamie Rule said the issue was attributed to the ongoing issue on a Proserpine power line.

"The ten minute outage was us trying to restart that (Proserpine) powerline and it caused that issue to restart and it became obvious the problem was with the powerline and not the substation," he said.

There are still 1600 people without power between Proserpine and Cannonvale.

Mr Rule said he received assurances that all crew members were on the case and that there was no estimated time-frame to resolve the issue.

More to come.

INITIAL: ABOUT 1600 electricity users are currently without power across the Whitsundays.

Crews were dispatched by the Townsville office of Ergon Energy just after 4pm to the sub-station in Proserpine.

Ergon were reporting their systems had detected a SCADA shutdown which was designed to be a precautionary measure in order to protect the wider electricity network, communications manager Jamie Rule said.

"If they find it's something minor they will reset it and power should be restored quite quickly," he said.

Mr Rule eliminated a downed power pole as the cause for the supply interruption but could not offer an explanation as to why so many Ergon customers were without power.

Parts of Cannonvale still have power but most of Proserpine and some of Jubilee Pocket is currently blacked out.
