$1million in budget for centre

THE Proserpine community was one of the Whitsunday winners in the State Budget on Tuesday receiving $1 million in funding to establish a community centre.

Essential infrastructure upgrades to water and sewerage will also be helped along with $18 million in State funding put towards the projects.

Whitsunday tourism was not overlooked and received $200,000 for Tourism Whitsundays to focus on regional projects that contribute to tourism development and marketing. Council mayor Mike Brunker said he was pleased with how the region had fared given the current economic climate and gave it the "thumbs up".

"I wasn’t expecting too much but I think we have done alright," he said.

Cr Brunker said the $18 million in water and sewerage funding would ease the strain on loan repayments council would have had to borrow for the necessary infrastructure in Cannonvale and Proserpine.

"That is hundreds of thousands of dollars in repayments that we won’t have to make," he said.

Almost $1 million was allocated to finishing a floating walkway at Abel Point Marina and Proserpine State High School and Proserpine State School will get a helping hand with $100,000 toward bus shelters.

Cr Brunker said he was pleased to see Proserpine gain funding for their community centre and said the Abel Point Marina pontoon would also be beneficial to the boating community.
