25,000+ Mackay region homes lose power in storms

MORE than 25,000 Mackay region residents lost power after this afternoon's thunderstorms whipped through the region.

Ergon Energy has advised that at of 6.17pm, a total of 23,858 homes across the region are in the dark, owing to "an unexpected fault on Powerlinks high voltage transmission network which supplies Ergon Energy and its customers".

A further 1456 residents out at Eton also lost power.

An Ergon Energy spokeswoman said power began to be restored to homes around 7pm after the power outage that affected the Mackay sub-station.

"We have resolved the issue and we're starting to get customers back on now... it will take some time, they won't  all come back on at once," the spokeswoman said.

"We've also had small pockets of outages across the Pioneer Valley and Cannonvale as the storms moved across the region this afternoon."
