$2.5K DAMAGES: Warwick man trashes house in drunk rage

A Warwick man said a broken heart inspired a violent alcohol-fuelled rage, in which he racked up thousands of dollars in damages to his rental home.

Police were called by a concerned neighbour to the Pratten St residence at about 6am on October 17, where they found a drunk Toby Owen Burt intoxicated in front of his then-trashed home.

Police prosecutor Ken Wiggan told the Warwick Magistrates Court Burt threw a toaster through the kitchen wall, then used a knife and his feet to stab and kick several more holes in the walls.

Sgt Wiggan added the 21-year-old also ripped a lighting fixture from the kitchen ceiling, with the full damages totalling $2596.

"When asked by police, (Burt) said 'I had too much to drink, I was really angry - I've been broken up with, I'm trying to quit cigarettes and alcohol, I've got no excuses'," Sgt Wiggan said.

The 21-year-old later failed to report to the Warwick police station to give identification on November 14.

Duty lawyer Clare Hine said her client felt like he had "nowhere to turn" and was battling mental health concerns at the time.

Ms Hine added Burt had been working closely with psychologists to address his substance abuse and underlying mental health concerns, and was willing to pay restitution.

Magistrate Julian Noud condemned the 21-year-old's "abhorrent, alcohol-fuelled rage", and warned him against adding to his already lengthy list of property damage convictions.

Burt pleaded guilty to one count each of wilful damage and contravening a police direction.

He was placed on nine months' probation, during which he must attend psychiatric appointments as directed.

He was also ordered to pay the full $2596 in restitution to the homeowner.

No conviction was recorded.
