25th year in silence

THE heritage-listed Majestic Theatre in Pomona has notched up another milestone in its 90-year history, with one of its best-known program features entering its 25th year.

Since March 1987, the Majestic has been screening the 1926 silent film The Son of the Sheik, starring Twenties hearthrob Rudolph Valentino and the beautiful Vilma Banky.

For many years the film was presented, complete with pipe organ accompaniment, every Thursday night. Nowadays it features on the first Thursday of each month in the Majestic’s Fork ’n’ Film program slot.

The Son of the Sheik will be the feature on Thursday, April 7, and remains a film of choice for many groups that come to the Majestic for matinee shows.

Anne Coombes, member of the Majestic Board of Management, said the live pipe organ accompaniment is essential to the authenticity of its presentations.

She said organist and former owner Ron West would very much like to take a holiday, so the board is looking to introduce more organists to provide music for silent films.

Keyboard players with an interest in the films and music of the past can to contact the Majestic on 5485 2330.
