A 27-year-old Canadian man has been busted with 51 turtles down his pants, as part of a plan to smuggle them to China.

His plan involved ordering the turtles online, then would either ship them to China or return with them to the United States, according to Associated Press.

He now faces up to 10 years in prison, after appearing in a Michigan court.

Kai Xu was found with 41 turtles strapped to his legs and 10 hidden between his legs, according to court documents.

Canadian authorities seized the turtles, which can sell for up to $800, and turned them over to their American counterparts.

Mr Xu's plan came undone when an officer noticed "irregularly shaped bulges" under his sweatpants.
