52-bed backpacker oasis proposed for Mackay

A NEW development could unlock Mackay's tourism potential, with backpackers encouraged to choose their own adventures from Andergrove.

Andergrove Lakes Pty Ltd has applied to turn a temporary carpark on Michigan Way into an integrated tourism and residential hub - the Mackay Adventure Lodge and Apartments.

The two-level backpacking motel and serviced apartment block would overlook the waters of the artificial Poco Lake.

"The principal goal is to service active tourists," Andergrove Lakes said in an application to Mackay Regional Council.

"The lodge will fully integrate with water-based activities on Lake Poco plus the bar and

cafe."

Andergrove Lakes said the budget 2-3 star accommodation would include room for 52-people, with many of the bargain-hunting travellers packed into bunk beds and shared rooms.

A communal kitchen, dining spaces, a pool and a lounge area would allow the travellers to mingle with fellow backpackers.

The development also promises opportunities for tourism venues across the region, with Andergrove Lakes offering bikes for hire, bus tours and a tour sales office.

"The intention is to sustain the tourism market by providing a range of offerings; activities,

accommodation and transport," it said.

And to stop any hijinks from the travellers, Andergrove Lakes said one first floor unit would be allocated as the manager's residence "for maximum surveillance of the lake".

Right next to the backpackers pad would be 12 two-bedroom units, each taking up 80sq m.

The services apartments on the eastern side of the development would include an open plan living, kitchen and dining area and ensuite, bathroom and laundry and views over Lake Poco via their 30sq m private terrace.

Mackay Regional Council opened up the proposal for public comment in August.

The council will need to approve the complex at a future meeting before it can go ahead.
