75% want junk food ads banned

MOST Australians support banning junk food advertising during children's television programs, new research by the Australian National University has found.

An ANU poll on food security and other food issues found that 75% of respondents thought junk food advertising should be banned during children's TV.

The poll also found up to 44% of respondents felt that genetically modified foods were safe to eat, but 54% said it was unlikely they would buy foods labelled as such.

Some 18% of respondents also said they opposed all junk food advertising, while 8% admitted they ate takeaway foods more than three times a week.

Cost-of-living concerns were not preventing 37% of respondents from eating out more than once a week, while up to 16% were often worried their food would run out before their next pay packet.

The vast majority of survey respondents, some 81%, said they thought food products were generally safe to eat but nearly two-thirds were not confident with foods imported from Asia.

About 1200 people were interviewed for this poll, with a response rate of about 40%.
