Abbott forced to threaten his cabinet over marriage leaks

PRIME Minister Tony Abbott has threatened to punish his Cabinet colleagues if they continue to leak information from high-level meetings.

Mr Abbott told the Coalition party room yesterday that he had "read the riot act" to Cabinet ministers after details emerged of talks on marriage equality at Monday's Cabinet meeting.

There has been backbench disquiet over the way divisions within the party on issues such as same-sex marriage have been played out in the public arena, with goverment ministers split on whether a referendum or plebiscite in the next term of parliament is the best way to resolve the issue.
