Community morning to promote organic chat
THE Whitsundays are well-known for environmentally conscious living and for having a particular penchant for a few afternoon drinks - so why not mix the two?
Whitsunday Organic Products is giving you the chance to do just that, free of charge.
The local business is hosting a community morning at the Whitsunday Sailing Club.
The organic producer's farmer and wine maker Sam Statham has been invited north to give a speech at the event.
Whitsunday Organic Products owner Janet Keppke said Mr Statham would talk about how to work with, rather than against, the environment.
"Sam's going to speak about land care and organic production, and how we should look after our earth," Ms Keppke said.
"And of course, in this area it ties in with looking after the Great Barrier Reef."
The wine maker is also an award-winning small business owner, allowing him to tour France and research their wineries.
"If people want to do wine making on a small scale, he's very qualified to do that," Ms Keppke said.
"But I think he will mostly be talking about the earth and how we cannot pollute it."
The event will also give people a chance to exchange ideas, Ms Keppke said.
"The Eco Barge Clean Seas people are going to have some information on what they do and the great work Libby (Edge) does caring for the environment," she said.
"Mackay Conservation Group have said they'll come up and tell people what they're doing.
"It's really just a bit of an open forum where people can talk."
Things could even turn somewhat political, Ms Keppke said, on the back of Australia's recent signing on to the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).
"It's going to allow the chemical companies to produce chemicals without much control at all," she said.
"So we'll be having a little bit of information about that too."
The morning will run from 10.30am until around lunchtime on Thursday, October 15 at the Whitsunday Sailing Club.
Bookings aren't essential, but an indication of attendance to Ms Keppke on 0419 783 524 is appreciated.
