Fun in the sun at WhitFUNday

FAMILIES from across the region are invited to head to Dingo Beach this Sunday, June 8, for the annual WhitFUNday.

This free community event includes dozens of market stalls, rides, games, raffles and competitions, with great prizes to be won.

Some of the favourite events include children's races on the beach, a family sandsculpting competition, Jack and Jill cross-cut saw competition, cast-netting and rolling pin-throwing competitions and the popular dummy spitting contest.

Event organiser Julie Houston said WhitFUNday was basically all about providing local families with a fun day out that didn't have to break the bank.

"It's a day for families to have fun on the beach and see our beautiful area," she said.

"All the games and competitions are free entry and kids do receive prizes for first, second and third places."

One of the biggest drawcards for the day is a $1000 cash give-away. To be in the running for this amazing prize, WhitFUNday attendees need to register between 10am and 1.30pm. The winner is drawn at 3pm and participants must be present to win.

Ms Houston said there were always plenty of other winners at WhitFUNday, with prizes valued at up to $300 in the monster goose club raffle and the famous seafood raffle, which she described as "huge".

Likewise the McGregors' sideshow alley is also an annual hit with the kids.

WhitFUNday is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Dingo Beach Progress Association, supported by other local organisations, such as the Proserpine Lions Club, whose members run a barbeque and licensed bar.

Dingo Beach Progress Association president Andy Dinnie said money raised from this year's event would go towards expansion of the local community centre, plus a donation of at least $1000 to the organisation Blue Care.
