Redheads pay homage to icons

IT was a spark of genius.

Redheads Matches yesterday released a new limited edition matchbox design collection series called Australia’s Big Things, paying homage to some of the country’s most iconic attractions.

And at the centre of the collection? The Sunshine Coast’s very own Big Pineapple.

The new collection, the first in three years, features eight different matchboxes depicting Australia’s big icons.

Others include the Big Banana and the Big Merino.

The fun and colourful designs will feature big sites from each Australian state.

Since 1959, Redheads matches have been synonymous with launching quirky matchbox designs, with past collections including “Chuck and Di”, commemorating the royal engagement in 1981, and an International series in 2002, depicting the famous redhead in New York, Kenya and Brazil. Throughout Australia, there are estimated to be more than 150 “big” structures, scattered in every state.

Often serving as the inspiration for a road trip, many locals and tourists make an effort to visit all the “big” things.

Redheads Matches have always been at the heart of a matchbox collection, with the collector editions dating back to 1959.

Then, owners of Redhead Matches Bryant and May released a Redheads series celebrating the Queensland Centenary.

Today, many of the vintage and often-quirky Redheads matchbox designs are a rarity, with several selling for more than $40 a box.

Matchbox collectors, called phillumenists, collect different match-related items such as matchboxes, matchbox labels, matchbooks, and matchcovers as a hobby.

The limited edition Australia’s Big Things matchboxes will come in wraps of 10 boxes and there will be a random selection of designs in each wrap.
