What Coel Ibbertson did has earned him a bravery award

IT takes a brave person to rush inside a burning house to see if there are people trapped inside.

Despite obvious danger, that is exactly what Coel Ibbertson did, saving a young family in the process.

For his heroic actions he received a Royal Humane Society of Australasia bravery award.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk presented Mr Ibbertson with the award on Tuesday at Brisbane City Hall.

Cr Quirk said many bravery award recipients had the opportunity to walk away and leave the risk for others.

"This act of bravery went above and beyond," he said.

"You acted on instinct and stepped up to the plate."

Cr Quirk was told Mr Ibbertson was visiting his mother at Emu Park on January 1, 2012, when he noticed the verandah of a neighbour's house on fire.

He called 000, passed the phone to his mother and immediately ran to the burning building without hesitation.

Mr Ibbertson realised the front door was locked, so he entered the house through a window and began searching for occupants, through a haze of smoke, finding two adults and three children asleep in their beds.

He woke them up and carried them to safety through the back door.
