Win over Mystics gives Firebirds yet another grand final run
THE Queensland Firebirds will play in their fourth trans-Tasman Championship grand final in the past five years after overpowering the Northern Mystics 60-44 in the semi-finals in Brisbane.
The Firebirds had been winners all over the court, none more so than MVP Romelda Aiken who finished with 43 goals from 49 attempts. Fellow shooter Gretel Tippett chipped in with 17 from 26, the pair having too much athleticism and height for Mystics defenders Sulu Tone-Fitzpatrick and Temalisi Fakahokotau.
At the other end, Queensland and Australian captain Laura Geitz had an enthralling, and extremely physical battle with goal shooter Cathrine Latu.
Geitz was able to keep Latu to 17 goals for the game before she was substituted out in the final quarter.
The skipper (pictured) said despite the comprehensive victory - which took the Firebirds' winning streak this season to 12 - the team was capable of playing better.
"That was a good performance, but there are still silly errors we're making," Geitz said.
She also said the home court advantage next Sunday could prove crucial after the team lost the last two deciders - against the Thunderbirds in Adelaide in 2013 and the Vixens in Melbourne last year.
"Hopefully it's a case of third-time lucky. I think we've given ourselves the best chance," Geitz said.
The Firebirds will play the winner of the other semi-final which was played between the NSW Swifts and WBOP Magic in Hamilton last night.
