A cleaner, brighter future for our reef
ECO Barge is excited to announce that in 2016 further clean-ups will take place as part of the Great Barrier Reef Clean-up.
The movement is delivered by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and funded through the Australian Government's Reef Trust.
As part of this initiative, the Whitsunday-based Eco Barge will be running 12 marine debris removal trips, numerous count and sort activities and one mammoth land-based clean-up.
All of these activities are open to volunteers within the community, and it's your chance to do your bit to help save the reef and clean up the Whitsunday region.
The land-based clean-up will be taking place on Saturday, May 14, and will focus on removing litter from Airlie Beach foreshore.
There will be a meeting point set up at the Airlie Beach Markets, so volunteers should meet there at 8am to register.
All clean-up equipment will be provided and a free thank you barbecue will then be held for everyone who was involved in the clean-up.
Founding Chair of Eco Barge, Libby Edge, said the land-based clean-ups only went for a couple of hours and were the perfect opportunity for families to get involved.
"We are hoping as much of the community as possible is able to come along and have some fun cleaning our local coastline together," she said.
Ms Edge said as part of the Great Barrier Reef Clean-Up, last year more than 3000 kilograms of marine debris was removed from the Whitsunday islands.
"Marine debris is an ongoing issue, so these removal activities are crucial to protecting our marine life and aquatic environments and directly stop the threat of our marine life ingesting marine debris," she said.
