IRENE Ferraris knows first hand what it's like to suffer from depression.

Having battled it for two years herself and with friends and a nephew also suffering, she is passionate about raising awareness in the Whitsunday community.

On Saturday night, the second annual charity Bullarama was held at the Reef Gateway Hotel to raise money for suicide prevention in the Whitsunday region.

Part of the Proserpine Rodeo Association, Ms Ferraris said she was keen to jump on board.

"We need to get people to understand what depression and suicide is so they can help," she said.

"There needs to be more people who know about it."

Previously raising money for cancer research, Ms Ferraris said the Proserpine Rodeo Association had worked with Jack Lumby, President of the A Mile in Their Shoes charity, to raise money for suicide prevention since last year.

"I take my hat off to Jack," she said.

"He's an absolutely incredible man and has been through a lot, having lost friends to suicide."

Around 1200 people attended the Bullarama and around $5000 was raised on the night.

Ms Ferraris said she overcame her depression 12 months ago and was now "doing well".

"I retired about 18 months ago and now my husband, Larry and I, are travelling."
