A tough trip to test out Cairns
TRIATHLON: Despite difficult conditions, Whitsunday triathletes all managed to conquer Cairns last weekend at the Ironman Asia-Pacific Championship.
James Carman led home the local contingent, well below his best but still still finishing solidly.
Darren Wadsworth lived up to his 'big improver' billing, taking eleven minutes off his personal best despite the conditions. Newcomers to the 70.3 distance Jemma Perkins (6.20), Meghan Cerqui (8.12), Dora Dale (6.24) and Karina Carniato (6.38) all did exceptionally well.
Dora and Karina in particular are relatively new to the sport and to be able to swim for over an hour was a massive achievement. Jemma surprised no-one with her result, while Meghan made the massive jump up in distance and didn't quit. The 'talk twins' showed just how much determination and positive self-talk can do, willing themselves to great times with Cassie Carman (5:51) and Joan Hunter (6:21) inside their previous best results here. Dawn Romanella was blown around in the conditions but flourished on the run, storming home in 6.36.
Hamilton Island bragging rights lie with 'Tall Paul' Fraser, who shaved five minutes off last year's time with a 5.33 and leading home Travis Clarke (5.45). Husband and wife David Stielow and Sarah Osborne found themselves as companions out on the course, coming home together in 6.43 and 6.44 respectively.
Local attention will now turn to running events closer to home. All eyes will be on the Colorbond Airlie Beach Triathlon on August 27-28.
