Addicts shop online for ice

TECHNOLOGY is fuelling Australia's ice epidemic as addicts turn to online classified advertising giant CraigsList to buy their next fix.

If drug users do not know what search term to use, they simply ask online resource Urban Dictionary to help get them started.

Susan MacManus, a parent of a former addict and co-secretary of the Ice Meltdown Project, made the revelations during the Federal Senate Joint Committee Law Enforcement crystal methamphetamine hearing in Melbourne on Monday.

The Ice Meltdown Project is a Melbourne-based organisation helping hundreds of Australian families get their addict children off ice and other drugs.

Mrs MacManus said users were finding it increasingly hard to escape the reach of dealers as they invaded every corner of their lives.

"With the internet, drugs are only a click away," Mrs MacManus told committee chairman Craig Kelly, a NSW MP, during the morning session.

Speaking to APN Newsdesk after appearing at the hearing, Mrs MacManus said her 32-year-old son's battle with ice opened her eyes to what was happening online.

"It is common knowledge that drugs are available online through CraigsList," she said.

"We (Ice Meltdown Project board) don't have a great handle on it but to me as a parent I was absolutely shocked by that, blown away.

"To be quite honest with you, drugs are now available around any corner."

The inquiry also heard from experts representing support services, police, psychologists and academia.

Public hearings will continue across Australia this week with the Queensland session to be held in Caboolture on Thursday, July 30.

According to recent research, 7% of Australians aged over 14 have used methamphetamines.
