Addict threatens to "knife" passengers on Jetstar flight

A DRUG addict threatened to "knife everyone" on a Jetstar flight from the Sunshine Coast to Melbourne after being told to stow his luggage overhead.

While some people would kill for a window seat on a plane, it was getting one that led Sam Llewellyn Hayball to threaten to do just that.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Phillip Stephens told the Maroochydore Magistrates Court that Hayball was not happy when he boarded a flight on May 6 to find he had been given a window seat.

Sgt Stephens said a passenger offered to swap an aisle seat but it was in an emergency exit area and Hayball became abusive when a flight attendant told him he had to stow his luggage overhead.

The court was told Hayball said, "I'm going to take everyone out" and "I'm going to knife everyone".

Sgt Stephens said passengers were offended and frightened by Hayball's behaviour and the pilot refused to continue while he was on the plane.

Hayball, 40, pleaded guilty yesterday to a behaving in an offensive and disorderly manner on an aircraft, an offence under the Civil Aviation Act.

Lawyer Nigel Munt said his client had arrived on the Sunshine Coast the day before the flight to begin rehabilitation for a 20-year heroin addiction but decided to go home after one night because it was "too hard".

Mr Munt said Hayball, who had since resumed rehab, was ashamed of his behaviour on the plane and remorseful.

"He readily accepts that people who were affected by his behaviour had no reason to put up with it," Mr Munt said.

Magistrate Annette Hennessy fined Hayball $2000, saying a significant penalty was necessary "to send a message that this behaviour will not be tolerated".
