Adventurer saves the day

WHEN Proserpine Hospital registered nurse Gemma-Eve Dubbelman set out on a two-month holiday around Europe, she never imagined someone's life would depend on it. Luckily she was in the right place at the right time and what a place to be - Greece.

Ms Dubbelman was already donning her Superwoman cape by travelling overseas alone with her newly-walking toddler Indie-Eve Wise. There were certainly challenges, from pickpockets in Paris to food poisoning in Rome, but being the first to scene of a single-vehicle crash in Athens had topped them all. A ring of people formed a circle around the Australian tourist as she stabilised a wounded Greek man who had fallen off his motorbike.

"I was just crossing the road. He was lying on the ground. I ran over to see if he was okay and reassured him to keep calm," Ms Dubbelman said.

"I did a physical assessment and had to ask onlookers to move on."

A short while after Ms Dubbelman attended to the man, locals called emergency services.

"The man had fallen hard on his back and kept on moving. It was scary, he could potentially be paralysed so I had to try and keep him still," she said.

"I made sure he did not move as I suspected spinal injury."

An ambulance eventually took the man away and due to language barriers, Ms Dubbelman was never able to learn his final outcome.

"Once the ambulance arrived, I assisted them to put on the C-collar and transfer him onto a stretcher," she said.

Over April and May, Ms Dubbelman made her way from London to Paris, Barcelona, Italy and Greece. She has now returned to work and said while her passion was nursing, the travel bug had bitten and she looked forward to her next overseas trip.
