THE AFL has announced former Macquarie Capital senior executive Robin Bishop will join the AFL Commission, while stating it wants more information before making a call on AFLW expansion.

The league confirmed the appointment of Bishop in a press conference on Friday afternoon. He will bring a "commercial background" filling the gap left by former chairman Mike Fitzpatrick, who retired earlier this year.

Richard Goyder, who replaced Fitzpatrick as chairman, joined AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan in welcoming Bishop.

The current membership of the Commission is Goyder, McLachlan, Paul Bassat, Kim Williams, Major General Simone Wilkie, Jason Ball, Andrew Newbold and Gabrielle Trainor.

However, the league did not make a decision on whether the AFL Women's competition would expand from its current eight teams.

"The Commission is absolutely committed to expanding the competition," McLachlan said.

"We've asked for some more detail on how and when an expansion would unfold.

"The Commission have asked (about) a number of issues and want to make a decision in the next couple of weeks ... (we've) asked some specific questions around talent, alignment with existing clubs and specifically if we did expand how that process would look."

McLachlan said the Commission's view is that it would like to expand "as quickly as possible" with the move to be made for either 2018 or 2019.

St Kilda and Geelong have been particularly vocal in pushing to enter the AFL Women's competition next season after missing out on licences for the inaugural season.

The two sides will stage a one-off women's exhibition match before Sunday's men's game.

McLachlan had previously stated that the AFL was unlikely to expand the AFLW until 2019 at the earliest.
