AGM recaps the 2015 cane growing season
PROSERPINE Sugar Services and Canegrowers AGM was held at the Metropole Hotel on Friday.
Guest speaker Adam Royal (Herbert Cane Productivity Services) delivered a talk on a water quality improvement program and manager of Wilmar's Proserpine mill Danny Van der Berg addressed the crowd and spoke about how challenges to the wet weather this season were overcome.
Manager of Proserpine Canegrowers Mike Porter said the meeting was a discussion of the season which ended in 2015 and usually discussion of this year's crush could be spoken of retrospectively - but not this year.
"Normally Danny can tell us what happened during this crush but we are still going. This is very unusual,” Mr Porter said.
The 2015 year was a good omen, Mr Porter said.
"The tonnage wasn't there but the CCS was very good and most growers were happy to put that year behind them. It wasn't a year of good prices,” he said.
"Growers didn't make a lot of money in 2015 but there is an opportunity in 2016 to make some decent money given the the current good prices.
"(That opportunity) only comes up once in a while... to have the tonnage and the price is good and you get the trifecta if you have the CCS as well. Growers will be very happy when it is all harvested and in.”
