Airlie Beach Race Week 2016: All crews back on the water
ALL good things must come to an end, and today's racing marks the penultimate day of 2016 Airlie Beach Race Week and the final winners of each division will be revealed tomorrow evening.
Conditions for the Whitsunday Sailing Club hosted Tropical Festival of Sail are expected to be more kindly than the big gusty winds of yesterday, with 20 knots forecast for Airlie Beach and its surrounds.
"Breeze will be a bit down on that of yesterday - low 20's and late teens," said Race Director Denis Thompson, who plans on starting racing early from 10am this morning.
"It will certainly be an improvement on yesterday's conditions and hopefully the rain will dissipate.
Thompson said the larger boats will sail a 30 nautical mile course taking in White Rock, the Molles and Grimstone Point, while the mid-range boats will sail a shorter version of that course.
Spinnaker Cruising Division 3 will contest the Daydream Island return race via Bluff Point.
"The tide will be north-west, so the boats will be beating against it, then they'll have a nice long downwind run to the finish from Grimstone Point," Thompson said.
"We'll send the Trailable and sports boats on three windward/leeward races on the bay," Thompson said.
Having been kept ashore yesterday, those in the Trailable boats (contesting their national title), sports boats and multihull classes are champing at the bit to be back on the water, along with the IRC and Cruising fleets, which did race yesterday.
This morning, we at Airlie Beach Race Week celebrated Australia's Gold and Silver medal performances by Tom Burton in the Laser and Jason Waterhouse and his cousin Lisa Darmanin in the Nacra.
We congratulate Jack Lilley on his eighth overall in the Finn and Ashley Stoddart on her ninth in the Laser Radial. All are experiencing their first Olympic Games and all made the finals of their events - inspiring performances.
Following the daily winners presentation tomorrow evening at Whitsunday Yacht Club, Sun Salute will entertain yachties, their families and friends, along with the locals with a mix of reggae, neo soul, jazzy hip hop and ragamuffin, a locals favourite.
