Airlie Beach Race Week: Crew member taken to Hospital

THE last day of sailing in Airlie Beach Race Week 2016 ended dramatically for the crew of multihull Play On.

Originally reported as an accident involving the boom hitting a crew member, it has since been discovered the main sheet trimmer injured his elbow after the main sheet got caught.

Skipper of Play On, Michael Meehan, said the incident occurred during pre-start manoeuvres yesterday.

"The main sheet trimmer got tangled in the main sheet and he dislocated his elbow," he said.

"We didn't know if it was broken but they put it back in. At the end of the day it wasn't as bad as what we thought it was going to be."

The main sheet trimmer, Tommy Richardson, was transported to Proserpine Hospital and is expected to be released today.
