Airlie misses out on visit
POPULAR Channel Seven weather man Grant Denyer has cancelled his visit to Airlie Beach today.
Plans for the breakfast show Sunrise to cross live to Denyer for weather updates every half hour this morning were going to showcase the area but flooded roads meant he couldn't get through yesterday afternoon.
Denyer has broadcast from the Daintree Rainforest in Cairns and Townsville this week.
He planned to broadcast from Hamilton Island on Friday, weather permitting.
Denyer told the Whitsundays Times he wanted to promote the region because it was struggling to regain visitors.
“We thought tourism would return quicker than it has,” he said.
“We are showcasing the different styles up here.”
Denyer has read the weather from a large number of places in Australia.
He said he couldn't understand why Australian's didn't holiday at home more often.
“I have a great passion for Australia and everything it has to offer.
“I love that corner (north Queensland) of the country.”
Cricket icon Matthew Hayden was also due to be in Airlie Beach today but had to postpone because of cancelled flights.
Hayden has been trekking across the Queensland coast as part of Operation Sunshine.
He hopes to re-schedule when the rain clears.
Hayden said he too wanted to showcase the region and Airlie Beach was one of his itinerary destinations.
