Airlie tri on this weekend
TRIATHLETES from right across the country will converge on Airlie Beach this weekend for the 2013 Sportspower Airlie Beach Triathlon.
The Ergon Energy Junior Triathlon kicks off the weekend's races on Saturday at 2.30pm, and the traditional sprint distance event will follow on Sunday, September 1, in conjunction with the relatively new race, the enticer.
Participants can choose between the traditional sprint distance race (750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run), the new enticer race (300m swim, 10km cycle and 2.5km run) or a team in either race. New entries will be accepted this Saturday, subject to availability and a late entry fee, however no new entries will be accepted for race day on Sunday.
The main race begins at 7am on Sunday with the enticer race (all athletes and teams) at 7am, the sprint distance women (all age groups) and sprint teams to start at 7.05am, followed minutes later by the men sprint distance (all age groups) at 7.12am.
Racking of bikes will be opened at 5.30am on Sunday and no bikes are to be racked on Saturday.
The move to a 7am start has been well received by competitors, residents, local authorities and race organisers and the exciting new two-loop cycle course makes things more challenging for competitors.
Spectators are encouraged to come down and cheer home the competitors on Sunday morning as local talents pit themselves against some of the best triathletes in the country.
