Airlie in top 20 Oz destinations
AIRLIE Beach has made it on to the top 20 destinations for domestic travel in Australia, according to data released this week by online accommodation website Wotif.com.
Airlie just snuck in at number 20 in the national list which was better than last year where it did not make the list.
However, Airlie came in at number eight in Queensland's top 10 domestic destinations, being bumped off its 2009 seventh spot by Mackay.
Tourism Whitsundays chief executive Peter O'Reilly said he was delighted to hear the news that Airlie Beach was in the top 10 in Queensland and top 20 in Australia.
“Wotif.com is particularly strong in the business tourism market, hence some regions on the list you might not expect to be so popular for holidays,” he said.
“Having said that it is a good sign to see Airlie Beach moving up and in with the major cities and tourism destinations within Australia.
“The increasing preference for last minute booking sites such as Wotif.com shows the change in traveller's buying habits.
“The most popular operators in Airlie Beach show that consumers are looking for good quality and affordable establishments.”.
The Gold Coast was ranked number one on the State's top 10 and Cairns and Townsville came in at number four and five.
Australia's top 20 destinations list was compiled based on bookings made through Wotif.com during 2010 and included a mix of capital cities and regional areas.
