Sunshine Coast on alert after virus outbreak

A MOUNT Coolum aged care facility is under "control measures" after a large number of staff and patients came down with a long-worded flu-like virus.

Queensland Health Public Health Physician Dr Margaret Young said there had been a number of reported cases of Human Metapneumovirus and Parainfluenza.

These flu-like viruses were "spread the same way as influenza" - by contact with respiratory secretions from infected people - but were not the same as influenza.

A Queensland Health fact sheet described it as "usually a mild illness", but in some people it could cause pneumonia or bronchiolitis.

Symptoms include fever, runny nose, cough, hoarse voice or sore throat and could last for eight days.

Numerous control measures have been put in place at the facility including "limiting activities in the facility so spread within the facility and the community is prevented".

Other measures included heightened infection control and identifying unwell residents and managing them to prevent spread to other residents.

"Residents, staff and families have been informed about the outbreak and its progress," Dr Young said.

"It is recognised that outbreaks are a concern, and the facility is doing all it can to bring the outbreak under control."

The number of influenza cases on the Sunshine Coast has also soared with 225 laboratory confirmed cases.

STOP THE SPREAD

  • Phone in for a sickie and stay at home
  • Wash those hands and don't forget the soap (or alcohol based hand gel)
  • Wash your hands before touching yourself (as in your eyes, hands, nose and mouth)
  • Use a tissue, but when no tissue is at hand, the inside of your arm will do, when you cough or sneeze
  • Dirty tissues belong in the bin, straight away! Or flush 'em.
  • Sharing is not fun if its your lippie, ciggie, toys or anything you've stuck in your mouth or nose
  • Stick to your personal space and tell others to do the same. One metre is the acceptable personal space for those with flu-like symptoms
  • Just keep cleaning. Clean frequently touched services regularly, such as door handles, taps, tables, benches and fridge doors.
