All systems 'go' at mill for July 4 crush
THREE contractor groups are continuing to work furiously at Proserpine's Wilmar mill to repair cyclone damage before the beginning of the 2017 crush on July 4.
Roofing contractors have worked alongside crews repairing the No.3 boiler stack and also general mechanical and electrical repairs.
The mill is a hive of activity and demountable buildings brought in as lunch and equipment rooms dot the grounds.
There is a sense of urgency on the ground with less than two weeks to make final preparations to the factory.
Mill manager Danny Van der Berg admitted there were whispers around town the mill wouldn't be ready but assured all stakeholders there would be smoke coming out of the stacks on July 4.
"We are well on the way to completing those projects,” he said.
Mr Van der Berg said the roofing work was nearly complete and mechanical components repaired off site were reinstalled.
EDMS engineering and Mackay company Linked Mining have both done a fine job, Mr Van der Berg said.
The refractory lining of the No.3 boiler (the thin stack) is now gloved in scaffolding as repairs continue.
"I know there have been rumours around town that we are not going to be ready for the start of the season and the No.3 boiler stack is about to fall over, but none of that is actually true,” MrVan der Berg said.
"We are ahead of schedule and we have had consulting engineers working closely with us to make sure we reinstate that stack back to a serviceable condition for the start of the season.”
Over 170 on-site contractors have been involved in the post-cyclone repair work.
