All-tide ramp closer but still a way off

AFTER 10 years of advocating for an all-tide boat ramp in the Gloucester area an independent feasibility study has made recommendation to the Whitsunday Regional Council for the second time.

At last week's council meeting in Proserpine a report made by GHD follows a study conducted by PRS Group assessment in 2010 and assessed the suitability of eights sites in the area - council resolved to further explore option four and option six.

Option four is Frog Rock in the north and option six is Blackcurrant Island located between Hydeway Bay and Dingo Beach.

According to long time advocate of the Blackcurrant option, Warren Hardy the Department of Transport and Main Roads has earmarked significant funds for the building of the boat ramp which have been available to council since July 2015.

The building of the only all tide facility between Bowen and Cannonvale is as close as it has ever been but there is a snag: access to the southern end of the island will need to be made over privately owned land.

Mr Hardy was at the council meeting last week and submitted a letter in which he expressed his disappointment at the inaccuracies in the most recent report by GHD. When contacting GHD, Mr Hardy was told information was provided by council.

Division 3 councillor Peter Ramage spoke to the motion and said conflicting reports commissioned by different administrations at different times were making the process "very confusing”.

"The left hand doesn't know what the right is doing... and if it's confusing for councillors it's very confusing for members of the public. We have got to let our thoughts be known to our directors... and they can pass it on and get a consultant in to do the proper costings,” he said.

Cr Ramage said it was obvious to locals that the Blackcurrant Island option was the only one that was out of the water at low tide.

Discussion about car parking and the length and breadth of the causeway and internal costings for access roads ensued.

Mr Hardy said the "poor performance” of council staff over the years was "so sad”.

"The misinformation and the lack of interest is incredible,” he said.

Council will now request a P90 costing of the all-tide boat ramp at the Frog Rock and Blackcurrant Island sites.
