Alleged rapist arrested in Airlie Beach
A MAN who was wanted on two counts of rape is now in custody after being arrested in Airlie Beach at 4am last Friday.
Jaideep Singh was brought to Monday's sitting of the Proserpine Magistrate's Court in police custody, also charged with two counts of unlicensed driving, two of breaching bail and one each of obstructing police, contravening a police direction, breaching a domestic violence order (DVO), driving while over the middle alcohol limit and failing to appear in the Redcliffe District Court.
Singh was found on the Airlie main street by Whitsunday police who saw him behaving aggressively towards a group of men outside the kebab shop. He was issued with a move-on direction but failed to comply. When police started to arrest him, he swung his arm out and tried to run away, forcing them to take him to the ground.
After his arrest it was determined that the 26-year-old had other charges still outstanding.
Police prosecutor Elizabeth Smith said Singh breached a temporary DVO made in the Brisbane Magistrate's Court on May 16, 2012, almost immediately after it was made, by following the aggrieved from the court.
She said the two unlicensed driving charges were from May 2013, with the drink-driving charge relating to a BAC reading of 0.117 on September 8, 2013.
Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist described Singh's subsequent failures to appear in court as "deliberate avoidance" of these matters.
He also brought up the "two extremely serious sentences of rape", for which Singh had failed to appear.
"And despite failing to appear at different courts in different jurisdictions Mr Singh, you continue to offend and make no effort at all to find out what is the result of your failing to appear or surrender and it's when on July 11 you come to the attention of police that you're brought to account for all of the processes here," Mr Stjernqvist said.
For breaching the DVO, Singh received an $880 fine. For each of the unlicensed driving offences he was fined $330 and disqualified from driving for six months. For the drink-driving offence he was fined $880 and disqualified from driving for eight months.
For failing to appear in court he was fined $1000 and for the offences of July 11 he received a $660 fine.
The rape charges were committed for trial at the Brisbane District Court on a date to be advised by the Department of Police Prosecution (DPP). There was no application for bail and Singh was remanded in custody until then.
