Amber a star at Brisbane show

HORSE RIDING: Proserpine's own horse-riding star Amber Greenhalgh has been at it again.

Taking on the Royal Queensland Show, affectionately known as the Ekka, Amber has returned with seven top-10 finishes.

Even getting to the Ekka is a feat, with riders required to claim seven first-place finishes leading up to the event.

"Then it's basically just lots of hard work, a lot of elbow grease to make sure their coats are looking on point," she said.

"We have horses from every state compete at the Ekka, so it's quite an honour to get to compete.

"Normally only the best of the best horses are there, so you work damn hard for any placings you do get."

Amber and her horse Su-Am Uncovered Mr Bentley, competing at his first royal show, claimed fourth in the led thoroughbred gelding, fifth in lady rider and ANSA led gelding, sixth in working hunter and ANSA ridden hack over 16hh, and eighth in open hack 16-16.2hh and best presented ANSA.

"It's always a gamble when you go down there," Amber said.

"I think I was happiest on the thoroughbred day when we got fourth.

"It's quite prestigious to get into it, let along to get picked out in the top 10."

As many as 80 horses can go head-to-head in the category.

Mr Bentley is a former race horse, showing that there is a happy life for horses after the track.

Amber has also managed to secure her place at the Grand National Championships in Sydney next year, where she hopes they will once again wow the judges.

Amber thanked her mum, Suzanne Greenhalgh, describing her as her "biggest inspiration", and her sister, who provided "plenty of pep-talks".
