Angry Birds brought to life

YOU'VE probably seen the game before in the palm of your hand and now you can see it on the big screen at the Proserpine Entertainment Centre.

And if you like your video game adaptations to be focused on recreating game play larger than life, you won't be disappointed by The Angry Birds movie.

The plot centres around Red (voiced by Jason Sudeikis), a self-affirmed outcast on an island of birds, who are for the most part a happy-go-lucky flightless flock.

Red is more an annoyed bird than an angry bird.

After an altercation at a kid's birthday party that he ruins, he's sent to therapy for his condition.

There he meets the speedy yellow bird, Chuck (voiced by Josh Gadand) and the literally explosive black bird Bomb (voiced by Danny McBride).

They become Red's buddies despite his attempt to remain a loner, and eventually the trio forms the core of a revenge and retrieval mission after the pigs invade, trick the majority of birds, and then kidnap their unborn children.

Given that the games have been enjoyed by fans of all ages, the movie tries to cater to children and adults alike.

The latter will appreciate the random homage to The Shining and some of the ways it has translated the material from the pocket-size frame of their phone to the big, 3D screen.

And the former will dig the slapstick and silliness and delirious pace.

Where the two audiences meet though, veers always towards the childish side with its swear-word substitutions of "pluck" and "flockin'" and other innuendo.
