Antarctic story to be shared at Whitsunday Sailing Club
WHITSUNDAY sailors Adrian Pelt and Nick Smail will share their Antarctic adventure of a lifetime at the Whitsunday Sailing Club tomorrow night (Thursday, July 10).
From 6pm onwards, the intrepid duo will present a slideshow detailing their amazing journey from the Chilean port of Valdivia to the wilds of Antarctica aboard Windjammer, a 70ft fibreglass schooner, owned by Ashley and Cathy Kerr, formerly of Airlie Beach. Mr Pelt and Mr Smail were part of a small crew of former Airlie Beach residents who took on one of the most inhospitable yet ruggedly beautiful parts of the world together, during the summer of 2013-14.
Highlights of their trip included visiting destinations such as Port William, the Beagle Channel and Ushuaia, sailing past Cape Horn and interacting with Antarctic wildlife such as penguins, leopard and fur seals and plentiful bird life.
Adrian Pelt said since returning to Airlie Beach "so many people have asked if they can see the photos".
"And every slide has a story," he said. Whitsunday Sailing Club functions manager Samantha Hayward said tonight's presentation would include many of these exciting photographs as well as the story behind each image.
"The whole journey sounds incredible and we are excited that it is being shared," she said.
"Adrian and Nick are great members of the club and we can't wait to hear from them."
Entry to the evening is a gold coin donation, with proceeds raised going to the Whitsunday branch of Sailability.
