Death of local shire councillor
WHITSUNDAY Shire Councillor John Walter Lloyd died on Saturday, December 29.
He was aged 65.
Cr Lloyd was first elected to Whitsunday Shire Council in March 2000, and was serving his second term as a Councillor for Division One.
He will be remembered at Council for his kind and caring character, combined with his passion and dedication to serving the community.
In his time as a councillor, he fought strongly for rates relief for pensioners, and has continued to support six monthly rating to ease pressure on families and pensioners. Always involved in the North Queensland Sports Foundation, with special interest in the annual North Queensland Sports Bursaries for students, Cr Lloyd was keen to see locals succeed and encouraged many students to take part.
Prior to becoming a Councillor, Cr Lloyd was employed by the Proserpine Shire Council (as it was named then) for more than 23 years, and worked as the Chief Administration Officer responsible for the administration activities of Council including overseeing the annual budget and other activities in the Financial and Corporate Services areas.
He started with Proserpine Shire Council in September 1975, having transferred from Boulia Shire Council in western Queensland.
He left Whitsunday Shire Council in January 1999, after serving in a number of roles over the term of his employment.
Council's offices will be closed from 10:30am to noon this Friday, 4 January, as a mark of respect, and to allow staff to attend the funeral.
His funeral will be held at St Paul's church in Proserpine on Friday at 11am.
As a mark of respect, the flags at the Civic Centre and the Proserpine Entertainment Centre will be flown at half mast for the entire day.
