Girls heading to fashion bash

DESIGNER Elmie van der Westhuizen and model Morgan Tween will be representing the Whitsunday region in this year's Townsville Fashion Bash in April.

The 14-year-old Whitsunday Christian College students have a long history of competing in fashion awards.

Elmie designed her first outfit in year seven and wants to eventually open a beauty salon and become a stylist.

Morgan aspires to be a photographic model.

Townsville Fashion Bash organiser, Henry Peterson, sponsored the girls to model at the 2006 Proserpine Festival of Fashion.

"We then went on to the Gladstone Sothertons Designer Awards where I placed first in the swimwear section," Elmie said.

Elmie's prize was to go to Sydney to visit the Whitehouse Drawing and Designing Institute.

Elmie has been sponsored as a showcase designer at this year's Fashion Bash and will design an evening dress and streetwear and must come up with her own label which will allow her to sell her designs.

"This is my third time entering the Fashion Bash, the first time was as a model and the second time as a designer," she said.

Morgan is entering for the second time this year as a model. At last year's bash Elmie came second in the Supre mix and match where designers had to mix and match an outfit from Supre's range of clothing.

Elmie also came second as the best hair model last year with Morgan taking out first for the best hair model.

Both girls have done lots of modelling locally in events such as Frocktails, the Bridal Expo, Melbourne Cup and Splash of Fashion.

"We do a lot of modelling for designer Cindy Liggins which has been great for our confidence and we really enjoy it but we would also like to do some modelling for Cairns designer Karly Jay," Morgan said.

"We are entering the Fashion Bash to give us more confidence and just to enjoy ourselves."

Morgan has also modelled for Supre, the Dolly formal in Sydney and has also appeared in Dolly magazine.

The girls are looking for sponsorship to help them get to the event and any local businesses who donate can claim tax deductions.
