Local teen volunteers in Peru with sponsorship from Zonta
By Courtney Osborne
WHEN Lucy Fraser was wondering what to do after graduating from Proserpine High School last year, the perfect opportunity arose to travel to Peru as a volunteer with World Youth International (WYI).
Luckily for Lucy, she was the successful applicant to receive a $1,000 grant from the Zonta Club of the Whitsundays.
Zonta approached local high schools and the public last year with the offer, searching for that one Whitsunday woman to sponsor for the WYI program- and they found Lucy.
While in Peru, Lucy will take part in community projects like construction of much needed buildings and facilities as part of a 10 week trip, plus a trek through the country.
"When I saw this program, I knew it was a sign? I've been surrounded by friends and family my whole life and I just want to see how I go on my own, experience travelling," Lucy said.
The enthusiastic 17-year-old has worked hard to pay for the rest of the trip, using money she originally saved for university.
"You can learn so much from travelling? I've always wanted to help in some way and with this trip, I can do better than a dollar a day," she said.
Zonta's UN committee chair Robyn Mitchell said Zonta was proud to sponsor Lucy on the program.
"It's a great opportunity for young women in the Whitsundays for personal development, team building and cultural understanding," Ms Mitchell said. Lucy will leave for Peru next month and will report back to the Whitsunday Times with her experiences.
