Top athletes compete
Every year since its inception, the Airlie Beach Triathlon has attracted athletes of the highest stature and this year's race will be no exception. Heading up the male field is Jason Shortis, perhaps better known as an international Ironman competitor who has been on the podium an incredible 22 times in his last 26 race starts. Jason is the only actively competing athlete to be inducted into the Australian Ironman Hall of Fame. With last year's champion Lucky McKenzie unable to defend his title this year, Shortis will start as favourite with strong challenges expected from Junior Professional 17 year old Morgan Thomas and Tim Berkell who was also on the podium two weeks ago in Yeppoon. The female race will be fiercely fought this year by the "new kid on the block" 19 year old Jacinta Collier who achieved an amazing 4th position overall at the recent Yeppoon Half Ironman. Former winner Liz Gordon is also expected to compete. The race will be called by well known Olympian Miles Stewart who has been prevented from racing recently following back surgery.
